Selectmen Look at Road Improvement Warrant Article Numbers

SANDOWN – For the past few years, voters have routinely approved large sums of money to keep their roads in good shape, and this year they will again be asked to keep up with the Sandown Road System Action Plan.

This year, according to a brief discussion the board of selectmen had at its Dec. 23 meeting, the highway department will be looking to make improvements to Fremont Road in the area of Odell and Sargent roads.

The portion of the road nearer to Fremont was included in this year’s action plan and that work was recently completed.

Because the deadline for warrant articles is fast approaching, selectman Hans Nicolaisen presented the numbers the highway department is currently looking at for the road improvement article.

According to Nicolaisen, there is an estimated cost of $265,000 for work on Fremont Road from Odell Road to Sargent Road, $39,500 for Odell’s approach to Fremont, and $10,000 for an overlay of the Fremont Road/Sargent Road intersection. The total estimate comes to $315,000.

For the past couple of years the board and budget committee have agreed to pull $100,000 out of the road improvement warrant article and instead place that sum in the highway department’s asphalt budget line. This allows the department to get work done even if the article fails. Thus the sum at this point going to warrant article is $215,000.

The board also agreed to keep the money needed for potential work to the bridge on Fremont Road out of the road improvement article, as while it’s in the same area, it is a separate project.

In September the board was visited by engineers with Hoyle, Tanner and Associates, who explained that portions of the bridge’s base have been scoured out by storm water. The estimated repair cost is $90,000.
