Sandown Candidates Seek Residents’ Votes on March 12

SANDOWN – Incum- bent Brenda Copp and new- comer William “Terry” Treanor are seeking two three year seats on the Board of Selectmen in the March 12 election. Copp said she thought it would be a hard decision whether to run again, but “as soon as I really thought about it, I realized it was going to be an easy one. I have been as they say ‘in service’ since 2007, first on the Budget Committee, Tim- berlane Regional School District Budget Committee and now on the Board of Selectmen. I am running again for the same reasons I have always run in Sandown.

“First and foremost I want to, and believe I do, make a difference for the res- idents of Sandown,” she said. “Second, I love what I do and enjoy working with the great people I work with in this town. Lastly, because I have broad shoulders and must be a little bit of a sadist.”

Treanor’s contact information is not listed and the candidate directed the town clerk’s office not to release
the contact information he left when filing. He could not be reached for comment. Interim treasurer Bruce Cleveland, Jim Devine and Erica Olsen are seeking a two-year term as Treasurer.

Cleveland said that since moving to Sandown in 2004, he has been involved in several areas of town government. The selectmen appointed him interim treasur- er in January 2013; he currently chairs the Sandown Budget Committee and was assistant moderator during the last election. Devine said that after 30 years of working at the U.S.

Department of the Treasury, he thinks the job would be a good fit for him. While tak- ing the post would require him to step down from his current role as a selectman, he said he would do so. Devine added that the hours would be better for him than his current selectman duties and he would like to use any extra time he found to look into improving or streamlining the fiscal issues in the treasurer’s domain. Olsen could not be reached for comment.

Police Chief Joe Gordon is running unopposed for another three-year term as chief. “I am committed to my career in law enforce- ment, a career that I enjoy, a career with many positives and negative aspects,” he said. “Every day is different, with more and more challenges, especially with the concerns in our society. Crime has increased dramatically nationwide, and in Sandown we are not immune.

“I have established a relationship with the com- munity of Sandown and dedicate myself to their needs and concerns,” he said. “I am fortunate to have officers who are not only professional but each one brings their own talents and specialties, which is the foundation of why we have a modern, educated, and innovative department.
“I’ve decided to run again for Police Chief because of my love of the job, my officers and my community,” he concluded.

Nelson Rheaume is running unopposed for a two- year term as Town Moderator. “After four years as a selectman, I decided that I would like to again give back to the town which I love. I would not be running for Moderator if Mr. (Gordon) Champion were running again. I have experience con- ducting large meetings using parts of Robert’s Rules. I am currently Sandown’s Director of Senior Affairs. As Select- man, I was involved in several Deliberative Sessions and through those sessions have gained much knowledge.”

Stephen Meisner is running for a three-year term seat and Matthew Brown for the single one-year seat on the Planning Board. Two seats are open for three-year terms. Brown said, “I grew up in Sandown and after being gone for 13 years I’ve recently built a new house and moved back. The process of building a house got me interested in how decisions are made.” Meisner could not be reached for comment.

Jacquelynn Sweet is the sole candidate for two three- year seats on the Budget Committee. She could not be reached for comment. Two three-year seats and one one-year seat are open on the Fire Engineers. Paul D’Amore is running for a single-year term and Fred Teague and Mark Vanauken seek three-year terms. D’Amore said, “Becoming a volunteer Fire Engineer is a rewarding and valu- able way to serve my community. It is not just a title.”

Teague said, “I volunteer my time as a fire engineer because I find it to be very rewarding to contribute to the welfare of others. We have a great camaraderie at the Sandown Fire Depart- ment. Also, my father was instrumental in the importance of volunteering. He had served on the Plaistow Fire Department for many years.”
Vanauken could not be reached for comment.

Incumbent Carroll Bassett is seeking re-election to a three-year seat as Ceme- tery Trustee. “Taking care of the San- down cemeteries has been a Bassett family tradition,” he said. “My father, Raymond K. Bassett, served as Sexton for many years. Upon his death, my brother Irving took over the job. Being a cemetery trustee is a bit different, but it is my way of keeping the tra- dition going.”

Two three-year seats are open on the Library Trustees. Incumbent Carol Staff- ord and Peter Stock are running. Stafford said, “After an enjoyable lifelong involvement with libraries as a patron, member of the Friends of the Sandown Library, Library Trustee and most recently as a staff member of the Kimball Library, my hope is that by continuing to serve as a Sandown Library Trustee, I can help to assure that our library is as responsive to the needs of the citizens of Sandown as our budget allows. The members of the Board of Trustees are also taxpayers who want to pro- vide the best usage of our allotted funds.”

Stock said, “I have always been an avid reader and a patron of the Sandown Library since moving to Sandown nine years ago. The role of the library is changing due to new technology available for access to books, newspapers and news in general. Encouraging young people to enjoy reading is very important to their development and a large part of the library’s role. The library needs to meet these new challenges.”

Incumbent Arlene Bassett is seeking the one three- year seat as Trustee of the Trust Funds. Bassett said, “If elected, this will be my third three- year term as a Trustee of the Trust Funds. Six years ago I was contacted by David Drowne, who has been the chairman for many years. He thought I would be a good fit on the board and talked me into putting my name on the ballot. I have certainly learned a lot from David and there is much more for me to know. I did not hesitate to throw my name in to serve again.”
