Discarded Smoking Material Causes Fire at Emerald Isle Auto Sales

A fire at Emerald Isle Auto Sales, 214 Rockingham Road, was confined mainly to the exterior, with minor damage to one room. The Londonderry Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at Emerald Isle on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 3:11 p.m.

According to Brian Johnson, Londonderry Fire’s division chief of fire prevention, “companies arrived on scene to find the front exterior of the building on fire, extending to the interior of the building through the front windows.”

Johnson said bark mulch and shrubs in front of the building were also on fire.
“Engine 1 advanced the initial attack line to extinguish the fire,” Johnson said.
Johnson said that upon fire department arrival, all occupants had exited the building. It took nine minutes to bring the fire under control.

No injuries were reported. Johnson said his investigation into the cause of the fire determined that it was the result of carelessly discarded smoking material.

“Responding apparatus included Londonderry Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 2 and car 4,” Johnson said.
Mutual aid was received from Derry and Manchester at the scene of the fire and Derry provided station coverage.
